DragonCon 2008 - Costumes: SteamPunk

Without a doubt, this year at DragonCon SteamPunk was the new hotness. Which was a lot of fun, because almost nobody knew what it was! In case you're among the uninitiated, here's what Wikipedia has to day about it:

Steampunk is a subgenre of fantasy and speculative fiction that came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often set in Victorian era England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date. Other examples of steampunk contain alternate history-style presentations of "the path not taken" of such technology as dirigibles or analog computers; these frequently are presented in an idealized light, or a presumption of functionality.

Steampunk is often associated with cyberpunk and shares a similar fanbase and theme of rebellion, but developed as a separate movement (though both have considerable influence on each other). Apart from time period and level of technological development, the main difference between cyberpunk and steampunk is that steampunk settings usually tend to be less obviously dystopian than cyberpunk, or lack dystopian elements entirely.

At least that's how Wikipedia describes it. Personally, I'd sum it up as Victorian but not at all goth, like cyber punk but in the past and not at all gritty, made of brass, powered by steam, fed by hydrolics (preferably exposed), governed by pressure gauges, wearing goggles with extra lenses, and unencumbered by all the crap that modern science says doesn't work. It is a fundamentally romantic esthetic.

I first got into it when I read The Difference Engine at some point in school, but this was the first time I'd seen this much of it all out in one place. Obviously, Abney Park playing had something to do with it, but I'm really not sure what happened to push it all past the "critical mass" point so that a whole bunch of kids all showed up wearing brass at the same time. Two years ago there was nothing, last year one or two, and this year, well... just take a look. Pictures explain SteamPunk better, anyway.

The Man behind the Madness:

Near as I can figure, this is the guy who built most of this stuff. I'm also pretty sure this is his website, The Steam Punk Workshop. If I'm wrong, someone tell me.
Photobucket

And he keeps pretty good company:

Photobucket

Sometimes, a SteamPunk's got to lay the smack down:
Photobucket

Other times, the laying down of smack is purely optional:

OK, then there is this guy, whom I'll call Baron von Somethingorother:
Photobucket

His stuff works, man! The little pulleys running from the control arms to the back pack actually work to control the articulated wings.

Photobucket

Articulated wings mounted to a back pack seems to be a popular idea:
Photobucket

All these gears and cog wheels were moving against each other, at least giving the impression that they were responsible for the slow beating of her wings.
Photobucket

Abney Park is also down with the winged creations:

The devil's in the details on these costumes, and I took several tight closeups, but they were more for my own reference later. Here are some more long shots of other SteamPunk creations around the Con:

She had the best goggles. And yes, goggles are mandatory.

SteamPunk is all about big machines. Which means, logically, that you need big tools!

I am a sucker for hexagons. Especially on a smiling lady.

I so wish I'd taken more pictures of these folks.

The gentleman in the above pictures (the "man behind the madness") is actually Danny Ashby, founder of Outland Armour.

The Steampunk Workshop site is run by Mr. Jake Von Slatt, who is an amazing craftsman and an inspiration to Steampunk enthusiasts everywhere.

The correct website for Danny's work is http://www.outlandarmour.com

I beg to differ on your comment that "SteamPunk is all about big machines", more specifically Steampunk is about late Victorian Era Style elements being applied to machinery and clothing and accessories, these machines can be any size really as long as they typically employ design elements that are commonly associated with the Steampunk genre (as well as the Victorian Era), elements such as typically an abundance of brasswork (both finely engraved and not), as well as occasionally featuring bronze workings, or copper workings, and even some woodwork occasionally too, these may be supplemented occasionally by the presence of optics or gem like protrusions too (often as part of various buttons or switches from what I've seen). In most instances the 'mechanics' of the machinery is left open to the observer as the inner workings are often times as ornately decorated as the exterior features. As for clothing typical examples usually contain silks/satins, velours, velvets, some occasional leather, colors typically include various shades of greens and browns, as well as burgundies and maroons, colors typically seen during the Victorian Era.

Howdy

With the increasing popularity of facebook poker chips as a virtual currency in facebook texas holdem poker game many hackers have engaged themselves, who try their best to trick unsuspecting players out of their hard earned facebook poker chips. All over the internet forums are littered with posts by innocent people who have had their poker chips stolen. Nothing is as sorry state as logging to Facebook or MySpace to play a few hands of poker only to find that your account is hacked and your poker chips are gone.

Keep these basic things in mind to protect your facebook poker chips:

Never give your password to a stranger: Trust is a delicate thing that takes a long time to build but only second to destroy. You may meet a sexy girl in poker room and you are friends with him/her. He/she will keep interacting with you days before playing her trick. So be carefull enough to protect your login credentials to yourself, else this may lead to disaster.

Be careful about what you download: Serious online gamers are looking for cheats or hacks for the games they play in order to give them an edge on their opponents. Poker is no different and there are plenty of websites on the internet having facebook poker cheats and hacks for those brave enough to download and install them. But many of these so called facebook poker cheats have viruses or trojan programs. The moment you install any of these your computer is at the risk of attacks by the creator of the program. He can then have access to vital information that you access from your computer. Leaving your facebook poker account at risk of been hacked. If you never downloaded any of these programs then you’re probably safe, and if you have then you should run a spyware detection program. The best move will be for get your computer formatted to avoid any loop holes.

Phishing Links: This way of hacking has been thee for quite sometime now. Scammers send legitimate and official looking emails to your inbox. When you open them you are asked to click on the link and login in order to save your account or win free facebook poker chips, but in reality you are logging into a fake site that sends your information off to the hacker who made it. Before you find it out, its too late to react and they would have already broken into your account and emptied it of any facebook poker chips that you may have.

YouTube scams: If you do a search on youtube for facebook poker cheats, zynga poker hacks, or free facebook poker chips you’ll find hundreds of videos on the topic. More than 90% of them are made by idiots hoping to convince you to send them your account information. They range from slightly clever to completely moronic.

Image Photo Having Exe Embedded In it: This one is hard to catch. This is the latest fashion that is used by phisher, you will be asked to share family photo's. When you open their photo, that will innitiate an exe in the background which will steal all your information and send to the mastermind behin it. So be careful with whom you share photos.

Hope these tips help you saving your chips.
